This academic year, a new reading group entitled In the Beginning Was the Deed will focus on contemporary debates on the primacy of action in relation to perception, consciousness, normativity, and meaning.
During the first sessions, the group will begin with a phenomenological approach to perceptual experience through Shaun Gallagher and Dan Zahavi’s The Phenomenological Mind. It will later turn to Alva Noë’s Action in Perception and Salvador Rubio’s Ver aspectos, bringing phenomenology, enactivism, and Wittgensteinian reflection on aspect perception into dialogue.
First sessions:
6 October: Gallagher and Zahavi on methodologies. Chapter 2, “Methodologies”, from Shaun Gallagher and Dan Zahavi’s The Phenomenological Mind, 3rd ed. (Routledge, 2021).
20 October: Gallagher and Zahavi on consciousness and self-consciousness. Chapter 3, “Consciousness and Self-Consciousness”, from The Phenomenological Mind.
